The route: Despite the modernization Zandvoort is a course from the old blow. The curtain built in 1948 is one of the shortest in the calendar with a round length of only 4.259 kilometers. And it is fast on the curvy drive through the dunes, which describes some pilot as Irrire. The untypical steep curves are spectacular, especially the Aria Luyendijkkurve shortly before lapenders. For the return of Formula 1, safety had to be increased comprehensively.
The location: The course is partly in a nature reserve, which makes it quite controversial. The route leads through the dunes of the North Sea resort Zandvoort, about 30 kilometers away from Amsterdam. The sand, which often blows on the route, represents an additional challenge for drivers and teams.
The statistics: After 36 years, Formula 1 is back in Zandvoort, also thanks to the popularity of World Cup candidates max stages. Between 1952 and 1985 the race series guested 30 times at the Dutch North Sea. Record winner is the Brite Jim Clark, who won four times. For the only German victory Wolfgang Graf Berghe made of trips in 1961.
The unforgotten race: Some PS enthusiastic is known to Zandvoort by the impressive shots from John Frankenheimer's film Grand Prix of 1966. One of the most exciting races, however, was the last formula 1 appearance in 1985, when Niki Lauda succeeded in his career for the last time in his career. In the bang-hard duel with McLaren colleague Alain Prost, the Austrian prevailed at the end of 0.2 seconds.
